Live the Generous Life
Living Life as though Jesus were living through us includes living generously. As we embrace generosity, we find that it not only changes our lives, but God uses our generosity to change the lives of those around us.

Why We Give
In his book, Generous Living, author Ron Blue says, "The amount of money you have has nothing to do with financial security or contentment. Neither can satisfaction be found in wise investments, careful budgets, or debt-free living. Instead, the secret to financial freedom and joy is directly linked to one thing: the willingness to be generous with what you have."
Being generous with our time, gifts and resources is a key indicator to our love for God, others and Life. The management of our finances has little to do with our financial security, investments, or disposable income but rather the state of our spiritual relationship with God. Our generosity is paramount to our ability to live life as though Jesus were living through us.
The Message version of 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 says it perfectly,
“This most generous God who gives seed to the farmer that becomes bread for your meals is more than extravagant with you. He gives you something you can then give away, which grows into full-formed lives, robust in God, wealthy in every way, so that you can be generous in every way, producing with us great praise to God.”
When we reflect and ask the question, "What does it look like if we truly love God?" we can’t overlook one of our Father’s attributes—the attribute of generosity (“this most generous God” vs. 9 above). Our ability to live a Life of generosity is essential to the accomplishment of our mission and must be developed in the lives of our fellowship. Take a look at these messages from a message series called, “In God We Trust” to understand more about our theology of generosity.
In God We Trust Message SeriesGenerous Giving Model
Harvest has defined a model for understanding generosity and growing in giving. It is how we teach our theology of generosity and stewardship. These four stages of generosity are explored in the In God We Trust sermon series.
-
Emerging
“I am just beginning my journey as a generous giver to Harvest Church.”
- I start where God is leading me.
- I’ll resist the temptation to spend … and then give to God if there is anything left.
- Grow in my understanding of stewardship.
- Use offering envelopes to start younger family members.
-
Tithing
“I am becoming a consistent giver to Harvest by prioritizing my tithe.”
- Scripture models for us that a tithe begins at 10% of gross income. Therefore we see 10% as the floor, not the ceiling.
- Make the tithe non-negotiable: each time I receive income or an increase.
- Discipline my giving by utilizing Harvest’s online giving, ACHD, or by scheduling a regular bill payment online with your bank.
- Denote my giving to the general budget as it generally represents my tithe.
-
Expanding
“I am growing in my faith by expanding my tithe to God through Harvest. (I am learning to be generous.)”
- Periodically review my “giving increase” — the amount you are giving to God through Harvest.
- Increase your percentage on an annual basis or as God leads.
- A good rule of thumb is to increase my percentage to my tithe by 1/2 - 1% each year.
-
Extravagant
“I am responding to God’s leading by going above and beyond my regular giving to Harvest. (I am experiencing the joy of being super-generous!)”
- Respond to the Holy Spirit’s prompting to give above my tithe.
- Harvest has a vision that exceeds the budget’s capacity to fund. Extravagant giving helps that vision become a reality.
- Classify my extravagant giving to Harvest’s capital endeavors (capital campaigns), Reach Out, or missional endeavors.
Not tithing yet? 90 Day Tithe Challenge
In the Bible, we learn a baseline standard for giving: the tithe.
When we give the first 10% of our income to the church, we’re putting God first as we exercise our gratitude, faith, and love for others.
The 90 Day Tithe Challenge can help you get started.
In God We Trust
In these four messages, Pastor Vern articulates our theology of generosity that provides the framework for our Generosity Model.

Emerging
In this video, Pastor Vern Streeter introduces Harvest Church's Generosity Model and covers the fears that keep us from experiencing God's blessings through our generosity.
-
Tithing
In this video, Pastor Vern Streeter continues the teaching of Harvest's Generosity Model by teaching on the biblical model of tithing or being generous to the local church as storehouse giving with 10% of our gross increase through our first fruits.
-
Expanding
Pastor Vern speaks on expanding our generosity in part three of In God We Trust.
-
Extravagant
Pastor Vern Streeter teaches that our Extravagant Generosity is really a response of gratitude of undeserved grace.
